By Mohamed Massaquoi
A delegation from the Sierra Leone Road
Transport Authority (SLRTA) headed by the Acting Executive
Director has over the weekend ended a familiarization visit to
the north, south and eastern provinces.
The aim of the visit was to meet with
stakeholders in the transport sector and to chart the way
forward for the effectiveness of the organization.
Addressing stakeholders at the Rendezvous
entertainment center in Kenema over the weekend, the Acting
Executive Director Serah Bendu expressed thanks and appreciation
to the Sierra Leone Police, members of the Sierra Leone Motor
Drivers and Transport Workers Union, Bike Riders Association and
other partners for the good working relationship they have
ensued with her organization over the years.
She said her major concern is to ensure
that there is a good working relationship between these entities
as her organization will not work effectively without their
collaboration.
“My key concern is the safety of the road
users, because for any life lost, it has a serious effect on the
nation. Therefore road safety committees has been instituted by
SLRTA to sensitize community people about the proper use of the
road,” she said and added that SLRTA lay premium on the issue of
road safety.
“We are planning to have reflectors on
motorbikes, vehicles and strategic locations so that the issue
of road accident will be minimized.
It is noticed that most of the accidents
that occurred at night is as a result of vehicles or motorbikes
not having reflectors,” she said and appealed to all
stakeholders to work with her organization for the development
of the country.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police,
East, Elizabeth Turay expressed her profound gratitude to the
newly appointed SLRTA boss.
She said the police and Traffic Wardens
are working closely to ensure that traffic rules and regulations
are properly implemented in the region.
She however complained members of the Bike
Riders Association for not working well with the police. The
